Hungarian wine is one of the Old World’s great discoveries: a remarkably diverse combination of historic regions, native grape varieties, volcanic vineyards and progressive winemakers. Our collection brings together characterful everyday bottles, distinctive regional specialities and fine wines with genuine ageing potential, all available for delivery across the UK.

From powerful Hungarian reds and mineral-driven dry whites to traditional-method sparkling wines and the celebrated wines of Tokaj, each bottle expresses something meaningful about its grape, region, or producer.

Twenty-Two Wine Regions, Each with Its Own Character

Hungary has 22 wine regions and an extraordinary variety of growing conditions. The cooler northern regions of Tokaj, Eger and Sopron produce wines with freshness, fragrance and vibrant acidity, while Szekszárd and Villány enjoy warmer conditions suited to generous, full-bodied reds. Between them lie the volcanic slopes of Somló, the vineyards surrounding Lake Balaton and the historic wine country of Pannonhalma.

Ancient volcanic soils, limestone, loess, clay and sand all contribute to this diversity. The result is not one recognisable “Hungarian style”, but a fascinating wine country that produces everything from light, aromatic whites and elegant rosé to structured reds and exceptionally concentrated sweet wines.

Hungarian Red Wine: Bikavér, Native Grapes and Villányi Franc

At the heart of our red-wine range is Bikavér, traditionally known as Bull’s Blood Wine. Produced only in Eger and Szekszárd, this protected Hungarian blend centres on Kékfrankos. Cooler Eger produces fresh, structured, mineral wines, while warmer Szekszárd gives Bikavér a softer, richer, fruitier character.

Native grapes reveal another side of Hungarian red wine. Kékfrankos combines juicy dark fruit, peppery spice and lively acidity, while delicate Kadarka offers translucent colour, bright red berries and an aromatic, spicy finish. Hungary has also given international varieties a distinctive new identity. Merlot thrives in Szekszárd, while the sub-Mediterranean climate of Villány produces Villányi Franc: exceptionally rich, velvety expressions of Cabernet Franc that have become one of the region’s defining fine wines.

Our red-wine collection also includes refreshing rosé and Siller, the traditional Hungarian style that sits between rosé and red wine.

Hungarian White Wine: From Volcanic Furmint to Aromatic Varieties

Our Hungarian white wines are built around native grapes and the regions where they feel most at home. Furmint and Hárslevelű express Tokaj’s complex volcanic soils; Juhfark produces taut, mineral wines on the basalt slopes of Somló; while Irsai Olivér and Cserszegi Fűszeres offer intensely fragrant, immediately appealing styles.

Olaszrizling from Lake Balaton and fresh Egri Csillag blends add further regional character. We also select international varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc when Hungary’s soils, climate or winemaking approach gives them a genuinely distinctive personality.

Tokaji Wine: Dry, Sparkling and Naturally Sweet

Tokaji wine represents far more than dessert wine. The historic Tokaj region produces crisp, dry Furmint; aromatic Hárslevelű; traditional-method sparkling wine; Late Harvest wines; dry and sweet Szamorodni; concentrated Tokaji Aszú; and the extraordinarily rare Eszencia.

Our selection reflects this complete spectrum. Tokajicum provides approachable introductions to the region; Gróf Degenfeld combines organic viticulture with an unusually broad range of styles; and István Balassa creates limited-production wines focused on individual vineyards and their distinctive terroirs. Hungarian Sparkling Wine

Hungary also has a sparkling-wine tradition stretching back to the nineteenth century. Our Hungarian sparkling wine range extends from Törley, the country’s historic sparkling-wine house, to traditional-method wines from Kreinbacher on the volcanic Somló Hill. It also includes organic Tokaji Brut from Gróf Degenfeld and naturally sparkling Pet-Nat from Steigler in Sopron, bringing together heritage, native grapes and modern low-intervention winemaking.

Personally Selected in Hungary

Our wine collection is curated by Best of Hungary co-founder Zoltan Kopacsi, who completed WSET Level 2 and postgraduate Wine Business Management studies at the University of Tokaj. His education and travels through most of Hungary’s wine regions are complemented by regular winery visits, vineyard walks and direct conversations with the people behind the wines.

These relationships shape the range's character. We chose to work with János Bolyki after visiting his remarkable Eger winery, built into a disused stone quarry, and walking through the vineyards with his two dogs. We discovered a forward-thinking producer creating accessible, customer-focused wines offering excellent value. St. Andrea provides a compelling contrast through its meticulous pursuit of quality and determination to maximise the potential of every grape and vintage.

In Szekszárd, Lajver combines modern winemaking with an openness to new ideas. Our shared love of dogs helped inspire the charming Labrador Merlot, while the estate’s quality is demonstrated by serious regional wines such as its premium Signum Bikavér. These personal connections help us select wines for authenticity and enjoyment.

An Award-Winning UK Hungarian Wine Specialist

Best of Hungary was named International Wine Challenge Specialist Merchant of the Year 2022 for Southern and Eastern Europe and was Highly Commended as an IWC “Unsung” Specialist of the Year in 2025. We were also runner-up for Decanter’s Central and Eastern Europe Specialist Retailer of the Year in both 2021 and 2022, while Decanter has described us as having the largest Hungarian wine portfolio in the UK.
