GRÓF DEGENFELD Organic Orange Wine 2023

£24.50

Order by 2pm Monday for next day delivery.

Organic Hungarian orange wine, this natural dry wine is an elegant vintage made with skin contact from white grapes grown in the volcanic Tokaji terroir.

Deep golden in colour, with a refreshing apple nose. A tantalising salty palate with chalky, stony notes reflective of the Hárslevelű grape’s volcanic origin, which is rounded off by a hint of sweet vanilla from the oak barrel ageing. A medium-long mineral finish.

What is Orange Wine?

Orange wine is a unique style of white wine with a long history dating back thousands of years to its origins in Georgia.

It is made by fermenting the pressed juice from white grapes with their skins and seeds for an extended period, a natural process that gives it its characteristic deep orange colour.

This method differs from making rosé, where white grape juice is fermented for a short period with the skins of red grapes.

As a result, the best orange wines boast greater depth and complexity of flavour than regular white wine or rosé while often featuring a slightly nutty, oxidative taste.

Food Pairing

Try it as an accompaniment to grilled meats or curry dishes. Orange wine also pairs very well with hard cheese or enjoy it alongside smoked salmon served with a drizzle of lime juice.

Gróf Degenfeld Winery, Tokaj

In 1994 the Count Degenfeld family successfully revived its wine estate in the heart of the Tokaj wine region, ensuring that over 150-year-old tradition lives on with the latest generation. Winemaking was closely intertwined with the family’s deep love and respect for nature; therefore, they have cultivated their vineyards organically since 2009. The family only work with native grapes best suited to the unique micro-climate, creating a range of single varietal wines with award-winning credentials. The bunches are hand-harvested and carefully vinified with minimal intervention. As a result, you are tasting an authentic drop of the volcanic Tokaj terroir with every sip you take.
