Our range has been chosen for provenance and character. Best of Hungary co-founder Zoltan Kopacsi visited producers and explored their stories firsthand, selecting spirits that offer British drinkers an authentic introduction to Hungarian craftsmanship.

Hungarian Herbal Bitters

Hungary’s most celebrated herbal spirits come from the Zwack family, whose closely guarded recipe dates back to 1790. Zoltan visited the House of Unicum museum in Budapest to learn more about the family, the historic distillery, and the brand's remarkable survival through two world wars, nationalisation, and its eventual return to family ownership.

The original Zwack Unicum combines more than forty herbs and spices in a characteristically intense, bittersweet liqueur traditionally served as an aperitif or after dinner. It sits at the heart of our herbal bitters collection, where you can also discover plum, coffee and orange interpretations alongside the prestigious Riserva.

Unicum Riserva elevates the family’s herbal liqueur through a distinctive double-maturation process. It is first aged in the largest and oldest 80-year-old cask in Zwack’s Budapest cellars, then finished in authentic oak casks previously used to mature Tokaji Aszú sweet wine.

The finished spirit is further enriched with 2007 Tokaji Aszú from Dobogó Winery. This brings a silky layer of honeyed fruit, apricot, winter spice and the luscious richness associated with botrytised Tokaji to the intense herbal foundation. Presented in a gift box, Riserva is a premium bottle for collectors and experienced drinkers seeking a complex after-dinner spirit.

Kalinka Hungarian Vodka

We later added Kalinka Vodka from the Zwack portfolio as one of the relatively few premium Hungarian vodkas available in the UK. Made from carefully selected grain, it follows traditional vodka-making principles and undergoes intensive filtration through active birch charcoal from the Ural Mountains.

This unusual production story results in a clear, soft and remarkably smooth vodka. Serve it well chilled with rye bread, smoked fish, pickles or charcuterie, or use its clean character in classic cocktails such as a Cosmopolitan, White Russian or vodka and tonic.

Artisan Hungarian Gin

Our dedicated Hungarian gin collection showcases how the country’s distillers combine local ingredients with imaginative contemporary techniques.

Chameleon Colour Changing Gin is made in small batches by Agárdi Distillery, the same distilling specialists behind our premium Hungarian pálinka. Its refined juniper, citrus and herbal character is complemented by butterfly pea flowers, which give the gin its entirely natural blue colour.

When you add tonic water, lemon or lime, the acidity causes a natural botanical reaction that changes the gin from blue to violet.

Seven Hills Tokaj Gin draws its identity from the volcanic Tokaj wine region. Its 21 botanicals include Hárslevelű grapes, elderflower, linden honey, blackcurrant, pink grapefruit, pine buds and sea buckthorn.

Its quality received definitive international recognition in 2021, when it was named World’s Best Contemporary Style Gin at the World Gin Awards. This world-championship title places a distinctly Hungarian gin made with ingredients from Tokaj among the leading contemporary gins produced anywhere in the world.
