This collection also includes carefully selected Tokaji food and wine hampers and our Tokaji Verjus Blanc, offering further ways to explore the region beyond the bottle.

What Is Tokaji Wine?

Tokaji refers to wine produced in the historic Tokaj wine region of north-eastern Hungary. Although the region is best known internationally for its exceptional sweet wines, modern Tokaj is far more diverse.

Today, winemakers produce elegant dry whites, mineral single-vineyard wines, traditional-method sparkling wines, aromatic late-harvest styles and some of the world’s most celebrated naturally sweet wines.

The region’s vineyards lie across a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity, while the Bodrog and Tisza rivers contribute to the distinctive local microclimate. Tokaj’s historic vineyards, villages and cellars form part of the Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.

From Dry Furmint to Tokaji Aszú

One of Tokaj's defining qualities is the extraordinary range of wines it can produce within the same region.

At the dry end of the spectrum, Furmint produces structured white wines with lively acidity, orchard fruit and pronounced mineral character. The grape is also used for sparkling wine and plays a central role in many of Tokaj’s finest sweet wines.

Explore our dedicated Furmint Wine collection for dry, sparkling and sweet expressions of this important Hungarian grape.

For sweeter styles, Tokaj offers everything from fresh, approachable late-harvest wines to Szamorodni, concentrated Aszú and extraordinarily rare Eszencia.

Tokaji Dessert Wine

Tokaj’s sweet wines are among the region’s greatest treasures. Their characteristic balance comes from concentrated fruit, noble rot in suitable vintages and the naturally vibrant acidity of varieties such as Furmint.

Our Tokaji Dessert Wine collection brings together the region’s principal sweet styles, including Late Harvest, Szamorodni, Aszú and Eszencia.

Tokaji Aszú

Tokaji Aszú is the most famous traditional sweet wine of Tokaj. Botrytised Aszú berries are individually selected and incorporated into a base wine or fermenting must, producing wines of remarkable concentration, complexity and longevity.

The balance between sweetness and naturally high acidity gives fine Aszú its characteristic freshness despite its richness.

Explore our dedicated Tokaji Aszú collection, including both 5 and 6 Puttonyos wines from selected producers and vintages.

Tokaji Szamorodni

Tokaji Szamorodni is made from whole bunches containing a natural mixture of healthy, ripe and botrytised berries, giving it a distinct identity from Aszú.

Sweet Szamorodni offers rich fruit, honeyed complexity and refreshing acidity in a style that is often more approachable than Aszú, while remaining unmistakably Tokaji.

Discover the style in our Tokaji Szamorodni collection.

Tokaji Late Harvest Wine

Late-harvest Tokaji offers an accessible introduction to the region's sweeter side. Grapes are left to ripen longer, increasing flavour concentration and natural sweetness while retaining the freshness Tokaj is known for.

These wines pair particularly well with desserts, blue cheese, and fruit-based dishes, while lighter examples can also be enjoyed on their own.

Dry Tokaji Wine

Tokaj is increasingly recognised for dry white wines that express the region’s volcanic soils and native grape varieties with clarity.

Furmint often produces taut, mineral wines with firm acidity and excellent food-pairing potential, while Hárslevelű can bring a softer, floral and more aromatic character. Sárgamuskotály, or Muscat Blanc, adds another fragrant expression of the region.

Our range includes straightforward, highly drinkable dry Tokaji alongside more serious vineyard-selected wines for customers looking to explore the region in greater depth.

Tokaji Sparkling Wine

Tokaj’s naturally high-acid grape varieties are also well suited to sparkling wine.

Our collection includes traditional-method Tokaji sparkling wines, including organic Furmint-based examples with fine bubbles, citrus freshness and the mineral character associated with the region.

These wines offer a different perspective on Tokaj and show how far the region extends beyond its historic sweet-wine reputation.

Personally Curated by Zoltan Kopacsi

Best of Hungary co-founder Zoltan Kopacsi has developed the Tokaji range around first-hand knowledge of the region and its producers.

During his postgraduate Wine Business Management studies at the University of Tokaj, part of the course involved visiting Tokaji wineries and meeting producers across the region. These visits gave him direct insight into the main Tokaji wine styles, different approaches to vineyard management and the contrasting philosophies of individual winemakers.

Rather than building the collection around a single producer or price point, Zoltan developed the range around three complementary winery relationships, each chosen for a different strength.

Tokajicum – Outstanding Value & Experienced Winemaking

Tokajicum forms the accessible heart of our Tokaji range, chosen for its combination of quality and excellent value for money.

The winery farms around 20 hectares of premier cru vineyards and works under the direction of experienced head winemaker László Buttella. The range offers an excellent introduction to Tokaj's main styles, from dry Furmint and aromatic Late Harvest to Szamorodni, Aszú, and rare Eszencia.

For customers discovering Tokaji for the first time, Tokajicum offers a particularly approachable route into the region without sacrificing authenticity or varietal character.

Gróf Degenfeld – Organic Tokaji Across a Remarkable Range of Styles

Gróf Degenfeld was selected for a different reason: its combination of organic viticulture, historic estate character and unusually broad range of Tokaji styles.

The estate has cultivated its vineyards organically since 2009 and works with native varieties including Furmint, Hárslevelű and Sárgamuskotály.

Within our range, Gróf Degenfeld demonstrates just how diverse Tokaj can be, with wines including dry Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat Blanc, orange wine, traditional-method sparkling wine, Late Harvest, Szamorodni and Tokaji Aszú.

This breadth makes the estate particularly useful for customers who want to understand how the same region and native grapes can express themselves across very different styles.

Balassa – Precision, Terroir & Winemaking Ambition

István Balassa represents the more intensely terroir-driven and artisanal side of our Tokaji selection.

Balassa Winery was established in 2005, with István building his reputation on meticulous vineyard work, a scientific approach to grape growing, and a determination to let individual sites and vintages express themselves as clearly as possible.

His wines range from approachable regional Furmint to serious vineyard selections such as Szent Tamás, together with highly concentrated Szamorodni and limited-production Aszú.

Zoltan selected Balassa because of István’s expertise, attention to detail and determination to make the finest wine each vineyard and vintage can produce.

Our Own Best of Hungary Tokaji Wines

Our close relationship with István Balassa has also allowed us to develop wines under the Best of Hungary label.

These include our Best of Hungary Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos, made from Furmint and matured in oak, alongside our festive Tokaji Late Harvest Christmas Pudding Wine, created as a more approachable sweet Tokaji for seasonal drinking and gifting.

These wines let us work directly with a winemaker whose style and standards we know well, while creating bottles specifically for our UK customers.

Special Vintages & Rare Tokaji Wines

Alongside the three core producers, Zoltan has deliberately supplemented the range with selected bottles that show something particularly unusual, historic or ambitious about Tokaj.

HOLDVÖLGY Signature

HOLDVÖLGY Signature is one of the collection's most distinctive wines. The winery describes it as its “liquid signature”: rather than following one single traditional category, the wine draws on historic Tokaj techniques to create what HOLDVÖLGY considers the strongest expression of the vintage.

Grand Tokaj Eszencia

At the other extreme is Grand Tokaj Eszencia, one of the region's rarest expressions.

Eszencia is produced from the free-run juice released naturally by individually harvested Aszú berries. The resulting liquid is extraordinarily concentrated and ferments only very slowly, producing a wine with very low alcohol, intense sweetness and remarkable longevity.

Our Grand Tokaj Eszencia represents the pinnacle of this historic Tokaji tradition and offers collectors the opportunity to experience one of the region’s most extraordinary wine styles.

Decanter Award-Winning Tokaji

Independent international recognition also plays an important role in how we assess and present the range.

One standout wine is Gróf Degenfeld Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2017, which received 97 points and a Platinum Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards and was subsequently featured by Decanter among the world’s best sweet wines.

You can discover more external recognition received by our wine range on our Press & Awards page.

Tokaji Verjus

Tokaj’s grapes are not used only for wine. Our Tokaji Verjus Blanc is made from white Tokaj grapes harvested before full ripeness, creating a fresh, gently acidic juice with a fruity and herbal character.

Verjus can be used in sauces, dressings, marinades and cocktails, where it provides acidity without the sharper character of vinegar or citrus juice.

Tokaji Food & Wine Hampers

For gifts and special occasions, we also offer two carefully assembled Tokaji hampers combining wine with complementary Hungarian foods.

Our Tokaji Gourmet Food & Wine Hamper centres on dry Tokaji Furmint, while the Luxury Tokaji Aszú Food & Wine Hamper pairs a 6 Puttonyos Aszú with selected gourmet delicacies.

Together, they offer an easy way to explore Tokaji wine in the wider context of Hungarian food and make distinctive gifts for wine lovers.

What Food Goes with Tokaji Wine?

Tokaji's diversity means there is no single pairing style.

Dry Furmint works particularly well with poultry, seafood, risotto, sushi and hard cheese, while sparkling Tokaji makes an excellent aperitif and pairs naturally with smoked fish and lighter charcuterie.

Late Harvest and Szamorodni pair well with fruit desserts, cakes, spicy dishes, and blue cheese, while richer Aszú is traditionally enjoyed with foie gras, mature cheese, cured ham, and desserts such as Zserbó.

Eszencia is so concentrated that many enthusiasts prefer to serve it in very small quantities on its own.
