LAJVER Szekszárdi Kadarka 2021
An elegant Kadarka red wine with a vibrant acidity and a rich fruit flavour, it is the embodiment of the grape variety known as the 'Hungarian Pinot Noir'.
The 2021 vintage in Szekszárd was dry with plenty of sunshine, allowing for the perfect ripening of grapes. This juicy red wine is made in a small batch from only carefully hand-selected bunches.
The unmistakable Kadarka notes of currants, cherries and paprika accompany the fresh red berry aromas. A light body and lively acidity make this a refreshing choice.
What is Kadarka?
It is a historic red wine grape, renowned for its light-bodied elegance, delicate spice, and vibrant fruit profile. Once the dominant variety in Hungary, Kadarka is a key component of the famous Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) blend.
Believed to have arrived in the country from the Balkans centuries ago, Kadarka thrives in the warm yet moderated climates of southern Hungary, like the Szekszárd region. Its thin skin and naturally low tannins produce wines with a translucent ruby hue and a graceful, silky texture, which often draws comparisons to Pinot Noir.
Modern kadarka wines are experiencing a revival as winemakers craft single-varietal vintages, showcasing its maximum potential to produce terroir-driven wines. This approachable style offers wine lovers a bridge between classic Central European reds and contemporary trends.
Food Pairing
A versatile red wine, it makes a perfect accompaniment for grilled meats and vegetable stews like a shakshuka. For an authentic pairing, try with traditional Hungarian dishes like a rich stew of paprika potatoes or a Baracskai semi-hard cheese.
