Hungarian Red Wine

The best-known Hungarian red wine is Bikavér, or Bull's Blood. This special blend is unique to the Eger and Szekszárd regions of Hungary. Egri Bikavér reflects the cool-climate terroir, typically showcasing a rich palate of dark fruit, lively acidity, and a tight tannic structure. If you prefer your Bordeaux blends, then Bull's Blood from the Mediterranean climate of Szekszárd will delight you with full body and an intensely fruity flavour, rounded out by aromatic, spiced notes from oak barrel ageing. Crafted according to a strict set of regulations that still leave space for creativity, each glass of Bikavér is the winemaker's liquid signature.

The country is also home to a fascinating selection of native grapes. Kékfrankos, also known as Blaufränkisch, feels especially at home in the cool climate of Sopron, and Soproni Kékfrankos is now internationally recognised as a premium-quality red wine with considerable potential.

The elegant Kadarka grape, also known as the 'Hungarian Pinot Noir', is perfect for making refined vintages with vibrant acidity and rich red berry flavours.

Hungarian rosé comes in a variety of styles, ranging from refreshing, salmon-pink examples to serious wines offering plenty of substance.

Hungarian red wines pair perfectly with the country's paprika-based cuisine. Serve traditional goulash with a bottle of Bull's Blood, while the acidity of Kékfrankos cuts beautifully through spicy dishes.
