Pale ruby in colour, this is a medium-bodied, youthful wine with a refreshing touch of fizz. Delicate aromas of sweet spices, honey and red fruits, especially strawberry and raspberry. The same mouthwatering fruit character dominates on the palate, with added notes of sour cherries and cranberries. Expect more chewiness, more substance, than in a classic rosé. Light acidity, moderate alcohol, and a good-length finish round out this enjoyable vintage.
Siller (pronounced shiller) is a Hungarian and German speciality and is one of the oldest styles of pink wine. Traditionally it was produced by picking and fermenting red and white grapes together, but today it is made from red grapes only - mainly the indigenous Kadarka and Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch). When making a siller, the grape skins are soaked in the juice for slightly longer than with a rosé, hence its deeper colour and more concentrated texture. Extremely rare nowadays, this intriguing wine is essentially a crossover between a rosé and a light red; it is thus an ideal choice if you are looking for a 'rosé plus' with added depth and character yet the same easy-drinking nature.
Food Pairing
Try with smoked salmon, smoked ham or a salmon tartare. Goes well with your Wednesday night pasta, but also makes a great pairing with strawberries while lounging out in the summer sunshine.
