What is organic rice?
Organic rice is cultivated without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Instead, farmers rely on natural methods, including classic crop rotation, biological pest control, and sustainable water management.
To earn organic certification, rice must be grown in accordance with strict EU organic regulations, which prohibit the use of synthetic chemicals for at least 3 years prior to harvest.
Our certified organic rice is cultivated on the Hungarian Great Plain. This sunny, flat plain is ideal for growing premium-quality crops, while the swampy paddies are a haven for waterbirds and protected species.
Is organic rice really better?
Organic rice offers several advantages over conventionally grown varieties:
- Organic rice contains no synthetic chemical residues that may accumulate in regular rice.
- Studies have shown that organic rice often contains higher levels of nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
- Organic cultivation promotes long-term sustainability and improves soil health through composting and crop selection, and supports the growth of beneficial insects and wildlife, enhancing biodiversity while also providing natural pest control.
Which organic rice is the healthiest?
The healthiest organic rice depends on your nutritional goals and dietary preferences:
- Brown rice retains its nutrient-rich bran layer. As a result, it provides significantly more gut-health-promoting fibre, B vitamins, magnesium, and valuable antioxidants compared to white rice.
- The main advantage of white rice over brown rice is its greater digestibility, making it suitable for those with sensitive stomachs. Furthermore, as white rice is de-husked, it also contains lower amounts of phytates.
- Our European rice has significantly lower arsenic levels than most basmati and jasmine rice grown in Asia, making it a safe option for infants and young children, as well as suitable for regular consumption.
- A traditional and natural medium-grain variety, it also contains more protein than most alternatives, which helps you feel full and energised for longer.
- Since it is prepared in a facility that cannot be cross-contaminated, our gluten-free rice is ideal for a wide range of dietary requirements.
Why choose European rice?
Since European organic standards are among the world's strictest, selecting European rice supports sustainable agriculture and ethical farming practices while ensuring guaranteed provenance and traceability from farm to fork.
At the same time, you're also supporting local agricultural communities and reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance food transportation from suppliers based further afield.
