What Is Traditional Hungarian Easter Food?

Hungarian Easter celebrations centre around a generous family meal, with several dishes appearing on tables across the country year after year.

The most characteristic savoury centrepiece is Húsvéti Sonka, or Easter ham, traditionally served with hard-boiled eggs, fresh spring vegetables and plenty of horseradish.

Sweet pastries are equally important. Bejgli filled with poppy seed or walnut, zserbó and other rich cakes are commonly shared with family and guests throughout the Easter weekend.

Húsvéti Sonka – Traditional Hungarian Easter Ham

Húsvéti Sonka is one of the defining foods of a traditional Hungarian Easter table.

The cured and smoked ham is normally cooked before serving and sliced for the Easter meal, where it is accompanied by hard-boiled eggs, fresh vegetables and horseradish.

The ham's rich, savoury flavour pairs particularly well with the sharp heat of horseradish, making them a classic Easter pairing.

Horseradish with Easter Ham

Horseradish sauce is an important accompaniment to Hungarian Easter ham.

It is a simple but essential part of the Easter table, as its sharp, pungent flavour cuts through the richness of smoked meat.

Bejgli at Easter

Although bejgli is most strongly associated with Christmas, it is also widely enjoyed at Easter and other family celebrations in Hungary.

The two classic varieties are Mákos Bejgli, filled with poppy seed, and Diós Bejgli, filled with ground walnuts.

Both are sliced into rounds and served with coffee or tea after the Easter meal or offered to visiting family and friends throughout the holiday.

Our range also includes Plum Bejgli, a Nándori speciality made with plum preserve and dried plums soaked in Zwack Unicum, as well as the bakery’s contemporary Bejgli Cake.

Zserbó – A Hungarian Easter Favourite

Zserbó is one of Hungary’s best-known cakes and is traditionally enjoyed during major family celebrations, including both Christmas and Easter.

It is made with layers of pastry, apricot jam and ground walnuts, finished with a dark chocolate topping.

The combination of fruit, nuts and chocolate makes zserbó particularly well suited to a festive dessert table and a natural companion to coffee after Easter lunch.

Great Taste Award-Winning Bejgli Cake

Our 350g Bejgli Cake received 1 Star at the 2026 Great Taste Awards by the Guild of Fine Food, providing independent recognition of its flavour and overall quality.

The cake brings together characteristic Hungarian festive flavours in a modern format and works particularly well as part of an Easter dessert selection.

Tokaji Wine for the Easter Table

Hungarian Easter is a time for family meals and celebration, making Tokaji wine a natural addition to the table.

Sweet Tokaji wines are particularly well suited to the dessert course, where their rich fruit, honeyed character and refreshing acidity work beautifully with traditional Hungarian cakes such as bejgli and zserbó.

They also pair well with richer savoury foods, including ham and mature cheeses, making them a versatile choice for an Easter feast.

Hungarian Easter Eggs – Hímes Tojás

Painted eggs, known in Hungarian as hímes tojás, are one of the most recognisable symbols of Hungarian Easter.

Our hand-painted Easter eggs are made from real hollowed chicken eggshells and decorated individually by Hungarian master artisan Aranka Baling with traditional Hungarian motifs.

Because each egg is hand-painted, small variations in the decoration are part of its individual character.

The Hungarian Easter Egg Tree

Decorated eggs are often displayed on branches to create an Easter egg tree, or tojásfa, bringing colour and traditional folk motifs into the home during spring.

Our hand-painted eggs can be hung individually from branches or grouped together to create an Easter centrepiece, and they also make distinctive gifts.

Locsolás – The Hungarian Easter Monday Tradition

One of Hungary’s most distinctive Easter customs takes place on Easter Monday and is known as locsolás, or sprinkling.

Traditionally, boys and men visited female relatives and friends and sprinkled them with water, later often perfume, while reciting a short Easter rhyme. In return, they were offered painted eggs, food, cakes or a drink.

The custom survives today in both traditional and more playful forms and remains one of the best-known elements of Hungarian Easter culture.

Made by Nándori Cukrászda in Budapest

Our bejgli, zserbó and other Hungarian Easter cakes are made by Nándori Cukrászda, a long-established artisan patisserie in Budapest.

Best of Hungary founder Monika Gyenes tasted cakes from several Hungarian patisseries before selecting Nándori for the range.

She chose the bakery for its combination of excellent flavour, quality ingredients, traditional recipes and small-scale artisan production, as well as the practical advantage that its cakes travel particularly well for delivery.

Hungarian Easter Gifts

Hungarian Easter food, wine and decorations also make thoughtful gifts for friends and relatives with Hungarian family connections or an interest in Central European traditions.

A hand-painted Easter egg makes a lasting artisan keepsake, while bejgli or zserbó can be shared with family over the Easter weekend. A bottle of sweet Tokaji adds a more celebratory option for someone who appreciates Hungarian wine.
