Mákos bejgli is a traditional Hungarian poppy seed roll. The irresistible soft pastry is made with a rich filling of ground poppy seeds and sweet spices.

What is it?

Beigli are popular throughout Central Europe, especially during festive occasions. These Hungarian poppy seed cakes are traditionally served as dessert during Christmas dinner and are also enjoyed for Easter celebrations.

The poppy seed (mákos) and walnut (diós) bejgli are typically eaten on New Year's Day, as consuming poppy seeds is thought to bring good luck and prosperity, while walnuts are believed to ward off evil.

You can enjoy it on its own or serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat.

It comes with a Best Before date of 30 days from the day of your purchase, so you can enjoy this festive treat throughout the year. We ship the pastry in special protective packaging to ensure it arrives ready to serve, looking and tasting its best.

How is it made?

To prepare mákos beigli, a dough is rolled out and generously spread with a sweet mixture of freshly ground poppy seeds and a variety of dried fruits. The filled pastry is carefully rolled into a cylinder and brushed with egg yolk, giving it a beautifully marbled, golden crust. It is then baked until it is deliciously soft and tender on the inside.

Each bejgli is made at the award-winning Nándori Patisserie, located in the heart of Budapest. Following a family recipe, a dedicated team of master confectioners prepares the cakes by hand, creating culinary masterpieces that embody the authentic flavours of Hungary’s 'Golden Age.'
