What is Bull's Blood Wine?

Bikavér, meaning 'Bull's Blood' in Hungarian, is a classic dry red wine. Made only in the cool-climate wine region of Eger and the warm-climate of Szekszárd in the south of the country, these wines are typically spicy and racy with high acidity.

Bull's Blood can only be made by following strict guidelines, yet this traditional terroir wine serves as winemakers' ruby red signature, living up to its famous name. Today, winemakers blend local with international grape varieties to produce perfectly harmonious blends that reflect their own individual style and the characteristics of the terroir.

The results are rich and fruity masterpieces with a tantalisingly complex mineral structure that express the best qualities of both land and grapes.


BOLYKI Egri Bikavér 2021

A classic Egri Bikavér from the Bolyki Winery, this special vintage showcases an approachable side of Bull's Blood.

Attractive, deep ruby colour. The spicy nose shows a core of dark stewed fruit and a hint of chocolate. Rich, chewy palate with intense black pepper spice, followed by dark cherry and blackcurrant notes and a touch of vanilla. Lively acidity, tight tannic structure, and long mineral finish.

Grape varieties: Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zweigelt, Blauburger, Portugieser

Soil type: Brown forest soil

Fermentation: Spontaneous, in a stainless steel tank

Ageing: 18 months in an oak barrel

Rich and complex, the intense and layered palate with resplendent fruit notes of black cherries and prunes is accompanied by notes of vanilla, sweet spices, tobacco and coffee from the oak barrel ageing.

The premium Bikavér of Lajver winery, this red wine made from handpicked grapes, embodies their vision of the Szekszárd wine region. It combines a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the native Kékfrankos and Kadarka varieties, creating an elegant, effortlessly cosmopolitan yet quintessentially Hungarian vintage.

An intense aroma of freshly brewed espresso and grated dark chocolate, accompanied by a fruitiness of blackberries and ripe raspberries. It is a robust wine with supple tannins, a round mouthfeel, poised acidity, and resplendent dark berry notes rounded out by the tertiary flavours of sweet spices and toasted notes from the oak barrel ageing.
