Traditional Austrian Cakes & Pastries
Discover our carefully selected range of traditional Austrian cakes and pastries, including some of the best-known classics of Viennese and Central European baking.
The collection brings together iconic Austrian favourites such as Sachertorte, Linzer and Ischler, alongside Mohnstrudel and selected Central European pastries that reflect the shared baking traditions of Vienna and the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
Austrian Patisserie & Viennese Baking
Austria has one of Europe’s most celebrated cake and coffee-house traditions, with Vienna in particular famous for rich chocolate cakes, fruit-filled pastries, biscuits and elegant desserts served alongside coffee.
Many of these recipes spread across Central Europe during the Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian periods, becoming familiar in Hungary and neighbouring countries while retaining their Austrian roots.
This shared culinary history is one reason Austrian cakes sit so naturally alongside the Hungarian pastries in the wider Best of Hungary range.
Sachertorte – Vienna’s Famous Chocolate Cake
Sachertorte is probably Austria’s most internationally recognised cake.
Created in Vienna in 1832 by Franz Sacher for Prince Metternich, it combines dense chocolate sponge with apricot jam and a smooth dark chocolate glaze. The contrast between rich chocolate and sharp fruit has made it a defining dessert of Viennese patisserie.
Traditionally served with unsweetened whipped cream, it works particularly well as an after-dinner dessert, celebration cake or indulgent accompaniment to coffee.
Linzer – An Austrian Apricot Jam Classic
Linzer takes its name from the Austrian city of Linz and is closely related to the famous Linzer Torte, one of Austria’s oldest documented cakes.
Our Linzer cookies are delicate sandwich biscuits made with a shortbread-style pastry, fragrant apricot jam, and chopped walnuts, creating a buttery, fruity, and gently nutty flavour.
The distinctive cut-out centre allows the bright apricot filling to show through, making Linzer an attractive addition to your afternoon tea plate.
Ischler – Chocolate-Covered Austrian Sandwich Biscuits
Ischler is another classic Austrian pastry, traditionally associated with the spa town of Bad Ischl.
It combines two tender biscuits around a fruit preserve filling before coating them in chocolate, bringing together the buttery character of Linzer-style pastry with the indulgence of a chocolate dessert.
Our version is filled with apricot jam, covered in dark chocolate and finished with pistachios, making it particularly well suited to coffee or a mixed pastry selection.
Mohnstrudel – Austrian & German Poppy Seed Strudel
Mohnstrudel is a traditional poppy seed-filled pastry found across Austria, Germany and the wider German-speaking regions of Central Europe.
The name literally means poppy seed strudel, with a generous filling of ground poppy seeds rolled inside soft pastry.
Poppy seed is a characteristic flavour shared across Austrian, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, and other Central European baking traditions, making Mohnstrudel a natural bridge between our Austrian and Hungarian cake collections.
Babka & Vienna’s Wider Central European Baking Tradition
Babka originated further east in Central and Eastern Europe rather than in Austria itself, but braided sweet breads of this kind have become familiar across the region and sit naturally within Vienna’s cosmopolitan pastry culture.
Our Chocolate Babka is a soft braided sweet bread with a rich chocolate and hazelnut filling, while the Pistachio Babka offers a contemporary variation with a roasted pistachio filling.
Both provide a modern counterpoint to the collection's traditional Austrian classics while maintaining the same Central European coffee-and-cake character.

Personally Selected by Monika
Founder Monika Gyenes tasted cakes from several Hungarian patisseries before choosing Nándori for the Best of Hungary range.
She selected Nándori for the quality of the finished cakes, the ingredients used, the traditional craftsmanship, and the breadth of its Central European repertoire.
The individual products were also chosen with UK delivery in mind, favouring cakes and pastries that can be packed securely and have sufficient shelf life for customers to enjoy them properly after arrival.
Austrian Cakes & Hungarian Patisserie
The culinary histories of Austria and Hungary are closely connected, particularly through the centuries of Habsburg rule and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
Cakes such as Sachertorte, Linzer and Ischler originated in Austria but became familiar throughout the former Monarchy, including in Hungarian patisseries.
Explore these connections further in our Hungarian cakes and pastries collection.
Made to Travel
Not every delicate patisserie product is suitable for nationwide delivery, so travel-worthiness forms an important part of the Best of Hungary selection process.
Monika chose cakes and pastries that can be protected effectively in transit and retain their flavour, texture and presentation well after leaving the bakery.
