Mohnstrudel 500g - German Poppy Seed Strudel
Mohnstrudel is a classic German and Austrian poppy seed strudel, rolled in soft, golden pastry and filled with a rich, aromatic ground poppy seed filling.
What Is Mohnstrudel?
Mohnstrudel is a traditional sweet pastry from the German-speaking heart of Central Europe. “Mohn” is the German word for poppy seed, while “Strudel” refers to the rolled pastry.
It belongs to the shared baking traditions of Germany and Austria, and is especially at home in Austrian coffee-house culture, where a slice of cake and a hot drink turn an ordinary afternoon into a proper treat.
Its deep, gently nutty filling is balanced by sweet dried plum, lemon peel and warming cinnamon, all wrapped in tender yeast pastry. Although Mohnstrudel is especially popular during Advent and the Christmas season, it is far too good to reserve for winter. Enjoy it at breakfast, with afternoon coffee, or as an after-dinner dessert year-round.
How to Serve Mohnstrudel
Serve Mohnstrudel in thick slices and give it the same attention you would a favourite café cake. Its poppy seed filling is full of flavour, so it needs only a simple accompaniment to feel truly special.
- Enjoy a slice with coffee, espresso or black tea for a classic Austrian-style afternoon Kaffeejause.
- Warm gently and serve with vanilla ice cream, softly whipped cream or vanilla custard for a comforting dessert.
- Dust lightly with icing sugar and add a few fresh berries or poached plums for an elegant cake plate.
- Set it out at a weekend brunch with coffee, fruit and yoghurt, or bring it as an easy-to-share cake for a family visit.
Serving Tip
Take the strudel out of a cool place about 30 minutes before serving. Use a sharp serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion to reveal neat spirals without compressing the tender filling.

Where Does It Come From?
Our Mohnstrudel is made by Nándori Cukrászda, a family-run patisserie on Ráday Street in Budapest. Founded in 1957 and led by László Nándori since 1988, the patisserie brings generations of craftsmanship to classic cakes and pastries from across Central Europe.
Skilled confectioners make each roll using a family recipe, spreading soft yeast dough with a generous filling of freshly ground poppy seeds, dried plum, lemon peel and cinnamon. After careful rolling and baking, the pastry has a glossy, lightly crisp exterior and a tender, aromatic centre.
