Sea Buckthorn

What is it?

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a thorny deciduous shrub that grows in various regions, including the Himalayan mountain ranges, the coastlines of Britain and Scandinavia, and the riversides of Hungary.

Each autumn, its branches are heavily laden with dense clusters of brilliant amber-orange berries, celebrated in traditional medicine for over a thousand years. These berries are bursting with flavours and natural goodness.

Their complex taste is intensely tart, featuring a blend of citrus, pineapple, and an earthy, wild essence that is entirely their own. However, what truly sets sea buckthorn apart is its exceptional concentration of vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, making it one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the world.

Where does it come from?

Most of our organic sea buckthorn is sourced from Töviskertem, which translates to "Garden of Thorns." This family farm is located in the former floodplains of the Tisza River. The plants are cultivated organically across four hectares of fertile alluvial soil, under the expert guidance of Edit, who comes from a family with a rich horticultural tradition.

The farm specialises in the Askola variety of sea buckthorn, known for its high vitamin C content and the absence of the bitter aftertaste found in many similar alternatives. The team is dedicated to creating a range of delicious products that showcase the benefits of this powerful berry, proving it can be both tasty and nutritious.

The importance of choosing organic

Opting for organic sea buckthorn is not merely a lifestyle choice; it significantly impacts the nutritional quality of what you consume and the broader ecosystem.

  • Sea buckthorn's thin skin and high juice content mean any pesticide used on conventionally grown berries can easily enter the final product. Organic certification eliminates this risk entirely, ensuring that you receive a product free from harmful chemicals.
  • Furthermore, the organic growing methods utilised, such as richer, naturally fertilised soils, are consistently linked to higher concentrations of the valuable flavonoids and polyphenols that make sea buckthorn so beneficial.
  • Organic farming practices also protect the soil biodiversity and wildlife that depend on these habitats.
  • Organic certification provides an independently verified traceability from berry to bottle, so you know exactly what you are getting for complete peace of mind.
