A handcrafted 4.5-inch mother-of-pearl caviar plate that makes an elegant individual tasting dish for roe, blinis and other small gourmet bites.

What Is a Mother-of-Pearl Caviar Plate?

This elegant 4.5-inch mother-of-pearl plate is handcrafted from natural shell. Its compact 10cm–12cm caviar-dish size is ideal for an individual tasting, a small special-occasion starter or a carefully presented selection of canapés.

Mother of pearl has long been used for serving fine caviar because it is flavour-neutral. It lets the delicate brininess, buttery texture and clean finish of the roe remain at the centre of the experience, without introducing the metallic note associated with ordinary cutlery and serving dishes.

Each plate has its own subtle variation in colour, shimmer and pattern. This is part of the beauty of natural mother-of-pearl and means that no two pieces are exactly alike.

How to Use a Mother-of-Pearl Plate

Use this plate as an individual tasting dish for caviar, or as a small blini presentation plate with a few carefully chosen accompaniments. It also makes a beautiful serving dish for elegant hors d’oeuvres, individual canapés and other gourmet bites.

  • Present a tasting portion of Siberian sturgeon caviar simply, with warm blinis and crème fraîche.
  • Arrange halved cooked quail eggs and finish each one with a small spoonful of caviar.
  • Use it for smoked salmon canapés, potato rösti, scallops or small seafood starters.
  • Serve fine salt, lemon wedges or other small accompaniments alongside a caviar course.

A Simple Serving Tip

For an especially polished caviar service, keep the tin chilled over ice in our glass caviar bowl, then use a mother-of-pearl caviar spoon to transfer a small portion onto the plate. Open vacuum-sealed tins carefully with our caviar tin-opening key.

Vietnamese Mother-of-Pearl Craftsmanship

Each plate is made in Vietnam by Viet Craft, primarily in Thụy Ứng near Hanoi. The historic artisan village has worked with natural materials for more than 400 years and is especially known for its heritage of hand-carving horn, shell and other natural materials.

Careful shaping and polishing turn each shell into a practical yet decorative piece of tableware. Its natural character gives every plate a distinctive finish, with gentle variation in colour, shimmer and pattern.
