What Is Sour Cherry Beer?

Soproni Sour Cherry Beer, known in Hungary as Soproni Meggy Ale, is a top-fermented fruit ale made with barley malt and sour cherry juice. Its deep ruby-red colour, soft pink foam and juicy cherry character make it a refreshing alternative to a conventional lager.

Made with sour cherry juice, it balances ripe fruit sweetness with the lively tartness associated with Hungarian sour cherries. The beer and fruit juice are matured together, creating a refreshing finish rather than a heavy or overly sweet fruit-beer style.

How to Enjoy Sour Cherry Beer

Serve Soproni Sour Cherry Beer lightly chilled, at around 11–13°C, so that its ripe cherry aroma and gentle ale character have room to come through. A stemmed beer glass is a lovely way to show off its rich red colour and delicate pink foam.

Its fruity, lightly tart character works particularly well with grilled halloumi, soft goat’s cheese, salty snacks and roasted poultry. It is also an unexpectedly good match for dark chocolate desserts or a simple chocolate brownie with fresh cherries.

Where Does It Come From?

Soproni beer has been brewed in the historic Hungarian city of Sopron since 1895. While the brewery is known for its classic lager, its Óvatos Duhaj range brings a more characterful, contemporary expression.

Meggy is the Hungarian word for sour cherry, a fruit with a special place in Hungarian cooking, baking and drinks. Soproni Meggy Ale brings that bright, distinctive fruit flavour together with the character of an unfiltered, top-fermented ale.
