Palinca

What is Palinca?

Palinca is a distilled fruit brandy typically made from fresh fruits such as plums, apples, pears, and apricots. The alcohol content usually ranges from 40% to 70% ABV, although traditional homemade versions can be even stronger. What makes authentic palinca special is that it must be made from 100% fruit with no added sugars, flavourings, or other ingredients, allowing the pure essence of the fresh fruit to shine through.

How is our Palinca made?

Our artisanal fruit brandy is produced by the Agárdi Distillery, located on the shores of Lake Velence. Only ripe fruit is selected, hand-harvested, and fermented before undergoing double distillation in copper pots. This process creates a remarkably smooth spirit despite its considerable alcohol content. Additionally, expert maturation in oak barrels infuses this unique drink with an extra depth of flavour.

Romanian Palinca vs Hungarian Pálinka

Romanian palinca is very similar to Hungarian pálinka, as both spirits share common roots in Central European distilling traditions. The names differ only in spelling and pronunciation. Both are fruit brandies made using the same double-distillation technique, and both must be crafted from 100% fruit with no additives.

The primary differences lie in regional variations and the specific fruits favoured in each country, though there is considerable overlap. We offer a wide range to ensure that there is something for everyone.

Țuică: The Plum Palinca

Țuică deserves special mention, as it is a type of palinca made specifically from plums. In fact, țuică is synonymous with palinca de prune (plum palinca). While palinca can be made from various fruits, țuică refers exclusively to the plum variety, which is equivalent to the Hungarian szilva palinka.
