What Is Mákos Bejgli?

Bejgli, also spelt beigli, is one of Hungary’s best-loved festive pastries: a beautifully rolled cake with a distinctive marbled crust and a rich spiral of filling. "Mákos" means poppy seed, and this version has the deep, gently nutty flavour and soft, fragrant crumb that make it a Christmas-table essential in Hungary.

While bejgli is traditionally enjoyed at Christmas and Easter, there is no need to save it for a special occasion. Serve a generous slice with coffee or tea, share it after Sunday lunch or keep it ready for a properly indulgent afternoon treat.

How to Serve Mákos Bejgli

This pastry is made to be sliced and shared. Its full poppy seed filling and delicate pastry are delicious at room temperature or lightly warmed, when the aroma of lemon and cinnamon is at its most inviting.

Where Does It Come From?

Our mákos bejgli is hand-baked by Nándori Cukrászda, a family-run Budapest patisserie on Ráday Street. Its story began in 1957, and László Nándori took over the business in 1988, continuing its tradition of carefully made Hungarian cakes and pastries.

Skilled confectioners prepare each roll using a family recipe, with a generous filling of ground poppy seeds, dried plum, lemon peel and cinnamon enclosed in rich pastry. The result is a proper Hungarian celebration cake: crisp and glossy on the outside, tender within, and satisfyingly full of fragrant filling.
