This smooth grape spread is made with 90% grape must and has the warm aroma of mulled wine spices. Try a spoonful with cheese or spread it on toast.

What Is Grape Spread?

Monika’s Kitchen Grape Spread is a Hungarian grape preserve made with 90% grape must, the juice pressed from grapes before fermentation. For our recipe, Lóránd Heit blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Bakator. The grape flavour comes first, followed by the warmth of cinnamon, cloves and star anise. The spread is alcohol-free.

It has the thick, smooth texture of a grape jelly and is soft enough to spread straight from the jar. Use it wherever you’d reach for grape jam on toast or pancakes, or serve a spoonful with cheese to bring out the warmer spice notes.

If you enjoy Piedmontese mostarda d’uva with cheese, try this Hungarian grape spread in the same way.

How to Use Grape Spread

  • Spoon it onto a cheeseboard with mature cheddar, soft goat’s cheese, cured meats and oatcakes. The warm spices make it especially good on a Christmas grazing board.
  • Spread it over buttered sourdough or warm crumpets, or roll it into thin crêpes.
  • Swirl a spoonful into plain yoghurt or porridge with toasted nuts.
  • Use it to sandwich buttery biscuits or fill little pastry cases.
  • Serve a small spoonful with roast duck or pork, where the fruit and spice pair well with the meat’s richness.

Cook’s Tip

For a quick glaze, warm a spoonful of grape spread with a splash of cider vinegar. Brush it over roast pork during the last few minutes of cooking.

Where Does It Come From?

Lóránd Heit makes this grape spread for Monika’s Kitchen at his family’s workshop in Pocsaj, eastern Hungary. Alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, he uses Bakator, a rarely grown heritage grape that was once a mainstay of the historic Érmellék wine region.

Bakator disappeared from Bihardiószeg for around 70 years. Lóránd helped lead the effort to bring it back, and his family replanted it there in 2013 using cuttings from vines that had survived elsewhere in the region. He also helped found the Bakator Association, which brings growers together to revive and promote old grape varieties.

Monika chose this spread for its rich grape flavour and to support Lóránd’s work to bring Bakator back into wider use. Explore more fruit preserves in our Hungarian jam collection.
