Hungarian Christmas Food & Traditional Gifts

What is a traditional Hungarian Christmas dinner?

Fish is an essential part of a Hungarian festive dinner, which is enjoyed on Christmas Eve (December 24th), either in the form of halászlé (Fisherman's soup) or fried carp fillet, typically served with a side of potato salad in a creamy tartare sauce.

Dessert would be slices of mákos bejgli and diós beigli, which are moreish poppy seed or walnut rolls, paired with a glass of the famous Tokaji sweet wine

This feast would be followed by the opening of the gifts, as fortunate Hungarian children don't have to wait until Boxing Day to receive their presents.

Popular recipes for the remainder of the celebrations include stuffed cabbage rolls, seasoned with a generous helping of the ubiquitous Hungarian paprika powder, essential for creating an authentic version at home.

This hearty dish is best enjoyed with a glass of Bull's Blood red wine.

Szaloncukor chocolates are also regularly enjoyed around this time, perfect for decorating the tree or as an indulgent treat.
