Orahnjača 500g - Croatian Walnut Roll
Orahnjača is a Croatian-style walnut roll with a generous filling of ground walnuts, golden raisins and citrus peel wrapped in tender, golden pastry.
What Is Orahnjača?
Orahnjača, also known as Orehnjača and often written Orahnjaca without the accent, is a traditional Croatian walnut roll with a rich spiral of sweet walnut filling. Neighbouring Balkan countries enjoy similar walnut rolls as štrudla s orasima, meaning walnut strudel. A familiar favourite at Christmas and Easter, it is also enjoyed throughout the year.
Our version combines finely ground walnuts with juicy golden raisins, lemon peel, candied orange peel and a touch of cinnamon. The filling is enclosed in tender yeast pastry with a glossy, marbled crust, giving every slice a generous balance of fragrant nuts, sweet fruit and bright citrus.
It is a cake made for sharing, whether brought out after a festive family meal, offered to visiting friends or enjoyed with an afternoon coffee. Beyond the holidays, its comforting walnut flavour makes it equally welcome after Sunday lunch or as a leisurely weekend treat.
How to Serve Orahnjača
Cut Orahnjača into even slices to reveal its walnut spiral. Serve at room temperature for tender pastry and a full, rounded flavour, or warm gently to bring out the fragrance of the walnuts, citrus and cinnamon.
- Offer slices with strong coffee, black tea or a small glass of dessert wine after a family meal.
- Arrange on a Croatian-inspired Christmas or Easter dessert table with fresh fruit and softly whipped cream.
- Serve lightly warmed with vanilla ice cream or poached pears for a simple, comforting dessert.
- Pair it with Makovnjača, our Croatian-style poppy seed roll, to offer the classic choice of walnut and poppy seed fillings.
- Take it to a gathering or give it to a host as a generous, ready-to-share cake that needs no preparation.
Serving Tip
Use a sharp serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion rather than pressing down, keeping the pastry and walnut spiral neatly defined. If the roll has been stored somewhere cool, allow it to come to room temperature before slicing and serving.
Where Does It Come From?
Our Orahnjača is hand-baked by Nándori Cukrászda, a family-run Budapest patisserie on Ráday Street. The business began in 1957, and László Nándori has continued its tradition of carefully made cakes and pastries since taking over in 1988.
Skilled confectioners prepare each roll using a family recipe, enclosing a generous filling of ground walnuts, golden raisins, lemon peel, orange peel and cinnamon in rich pastry. The finished roll is brushed and baked to create its characteristic glossy crust and tender, fragrant centre.
With its traditional walnut filling, this rolled pastry is a fitting addition to our Croatian food collection. It also makes a thoughtful food gift for Croatian friends and family who enjoy traditional walnut pastries.
