Mangalitza

What is Mangalitza?

Mangalitza is a heritage breed of pig, easily recognisable by its distinctive woolly coat. It originated in Hungary in the mid-19th century, resulting from the crossbreeding of hardy Hungarian breeds with the fatty Serbian Šumadija pigs.

Developed specifically to produce high-quality lard and meat, the Mangalitza thrived in the Carpathian Basin for generations, becoming an integral part of Hungarian agricultural tradition. However, as the demand for lard decreased in the 20th century, the breed faced near extinction, dwindling to just a few hundred by the 1990s.

Thanks to dedicated revival efforts by Hungarian farmers and breeders, the Mangalitza has been saved from extinction.

Premium Quality Charcuterie

Often referred to as the “Wagyu of the pork world,” Mangalitza is highly prized by chefs and food enthusiasts for its exceptional marbling and rich, nutty flavour. It has recently become a staple on fine dining restaurant menus.

Our artisan Mangalitza charcuterie is sourced from Szomor Farm, a family-owned estate located within the Kiskunsági National Park, which is situated in the second-largest saline steppe of the Hungarian Great Plain.

The pigs are allowed to roam freely and graze on a natural diet in this unique grassland. Raised outdoors at a slow pace, their free-range lifestyle leads to healthy and fit animals that produce meat rich in flavour and beneficial Omega fatty acids.

The charcuterie is expertly crafted using traditional recipes and the finest local ingredients, resulting in a distinctive range of authentic Mangalitza delicacies that showcase the best of this native breed.
