Hungarian Cakes
Cakes hold a special place in Hungarian culinary heritage, with many of them reflecting the country's position as a cultural crossroads, drawing influences from Austrian, Turkish, and Slavic traditions but featuring a Hungarian twist. They are often dense, nutty, and rich, showcasing local ingredients including dried fruits and honey.
The most famous of them all is the Zserbó Cake, a lavish patisserie featuring layers of apricot jam and ground walnuts, covered in dark chocolate, with the recipe originating from the proprietor of Café Gerbeaud.
Other popular sweet treats include Dobos torte, a sponge cake filled with moreish chocolate buttercream and topped with a shiny caramel glaze, and the beloved Eszterházy torte, made with walnut meringue layers and a smooth buttercream, topped with a distinctive spiderweb design of chocolate over white fondant.
Hungary is also home to comforting rustic bakes such as bejgli, which embody not only indulgence but also the warmth of Hungarian hospitality, bringing family and friends together over a delicious sweet treat.
Hungarian Beigli
Beiglis are Hungarian pastry rolls made with a sweet filling of poppy seeds or walnuts. A traditional festive treat, you can now enjoy them all year round. Similar poppy-seed-filled cakes are also popular across the rest of Central Europe, including the Polish makowiec, the Slovak makovník, the Czech makový mávin, and the German mohnstrudel.
The two classic varieties are mákos beigli, made with a moreish filling of ground poppy seeds, and diós bejgli, which includes ground walnuts, juicy golden raisins and candied orange peel. Beiglis form an essential part of festive celebrations; they are served as dessert at Christmas dinner and are also used to mark Easter.
With their distinct appearance, rich aroma of sweet spices and moreish flavours, beigli rolls are perfect for evoking treasured memories in anyone who grew up with these recipes, and they make an excellent present for your Hungarian friends.
How long does beigli last?
Our beiglis come with a Best Before date of 28 days from the day of your purchase, so you can now enjoy this Christmas and Easter treat throughout the year. Store them in a cool and dry place until you are ready to begin, and refrigerate after opening.
