Diós beigli is a traditional Hungarian walnut roll made with an irresistible filling of ground walnuts, juicy golden raisins and candied orange peel. Enjoy the cake on its own, or serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent moment of gastronomic bliss.
Beigli rolls are popular across Central Europe, especially during festive periods; they are traditionally served as dessert at Christmas dinner and are also used to celebrate Easter. Mákos and diós bejgli are also enjoyed on New Year's Day, as eating poppy seeds is believed to bring good luck and prosperity, while walnuts are said to ward off any evil.
How is it made?
The diós bejgli recipe is made by rolling out a yeast dough, which is then generously laden with a sweet blend of freshly ground walnuts and a selection of dried and candied fruit. The filled pastry is tightly rolled into a cylinder and brushed with egg yolk for its characteristic marbled, golden crust while it is baked until deliciously soft and tender on the inside.
Nándori Patisserie
Each diós bejgli is created at the multi-award winning Nándori Patisserie in the heart of Budapest. Following a family recipe, a dedicated team of master confectioners expertly prepares the cakes by hand to craft culinary masterpieces that bring the authentic flavours of the 'Golden Age' to you.
We ship the begili in special protective packaging to ensure that it arrives ready for serving, looking and tasting its best.
