What is pálinka?

It is a traditional Hungarian spirit similar in style to a fruit brandy. It is crafted by fermenting and distilling fresh fruits, with popular flavours including apricots, plums, cherries and pears. The natural production process prohibits the use of additives and preservatives, resulting in a pure, 100% fruit-based spirit.

The taste of pálinka reflects the fruit used in its production. The best spirits have a rich floral aroma and intense flavour which lingers long on the palate.

Pálinka is typically quite strong, with an alcohol content of between 40% to 60% ABV.

Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, and its heritage is recognised by its protected geographical indication (PGI) status. Pálinka is known as one of Hungary's national alcoholic drinks, and many families still create homemade versions following treasured recipes passed down through the generations.

How to drink pálinka?

It is best enjoyed neat as an aperitif or a digestif after a meal to aid with digestion. In Hungary, it is customary to offer a glass of it to greet guests upon their arrival. You can also add it to cocktail recipes for an infusion of fruity flavour or drizzle it over ice cream for a grown-up sweet treat.
