The nose on this Egri cuvée boasts orchard fruit, citrus, honey and delectable mineral notes. The palate continues with pear, apple, peach and the addition of grapefruit. Medium-bodied with fine acidity, culminating in a strong mineral finish.
Egri Csillag is a recent innovation from the Eger wine region in northern Hungary. The first samples were made in 2010, in an attempt to present the market with a white sister wine to the famed red blend, Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood). Blended from an array of indigenous and international grape varieties, Egri Csillag gives winemakers a free hand to create their own idea of a youthful, refreshing and easy-drinking white.
Beyond the obvious choices of fish and seafood, you may want to try pairing this wine with spicy Asian dishes or rich, creamy vegetable casseroles. Washed-rind cheese such as Appenzeller, Epoisses and Limburger will also be a great match.
