This exclusive selection of three rosé from three award-winner wineries and three wine regions showcases the many faces of this ever-popular variety. Ranging from light and refreshing through elegant and poised up to serious and distinctive bordering on a red wine, there is a rosé here for everyone.

FRITTMANN Rosé Cuvée 2018

This rosé is an interesting blend of two central European varieties: Zweigelt originates from Austria and is fairly common in parts of Hungary, while Medina is a Hungarian crossing that brings softness, fragrance and spiciness to the wine.

Delicately coloured rosé with a pale onion-skin hue. Youthful aromas of strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry on the nose; attractive and elegant. Vibrant, juicy fruit on the palate without too much sweetness; a lovely rounded mouthfeel overall. A well-made rosé with firm acidity and moderate alcohol, easy-drinking yet sophisticated.

Food Pairing Recommendation: An ideal aperitif on a warm summer day, or serve alongside light salads and tapas. Try with grilled poultry, baked white fish or a vegetable lasagne.

Serving temperature: 9-10°C

Winery: Frittmann Winery, Kunság

The multi-generational Frittmann winery is run by brothers János and István, who carry on the family winemaking tradition in the Great Plain of southern Hungary. They have achieved the two most prestigious national wine recognitions, becoming Winemaker of the Year in 2007 and Winery of the Year in 2015. Focusing their production on the highest-quality indigenous grape varieties of the area, they also offer wines made from international varieties.

BOLYKI Egri Rosé 2018

Less sweetness, more content is an apt way to describe this refreshing rosé. Made from the traditional Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) grape, the wine surprises with its deep, eye-catching pink.  Elegant nose of fresh fruit - red berries and cherries. Vibrant acidity with red and black fruit on the palate, and hints of citrus. More extraction here than in a light rosé, but it works well in this balanced, fully dry wine. Long, well-rounded, citrusy finish.

Food Pairing Recommendation: Try with white fish, salads and light pasta dishes, or serve alongside fresh cheese such as Feta or Halloumi.

Serving temperature: 11-13°C

Winery: Bolyki Winery, Eger - Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

János Bolyki is a first-generation winemaker at the vanguard of a new wave of dynamic young wine professionals, offering a youthful take on classic Hungarian wines. In his Eger winery, located in an abandoned stone quarry with the cellars carved straight into the rock, he produces a range of red and white wines which evoke the character and rich minerality of this unique terroir. For a refreshing taste of Eger, look no further than a bottle of Bolyki.

Grape variety: Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch)

VESZTERGOMBI Szekszárdi Shiraz Rosé 2017

A serious proposition unlike your typical light rosé, rich and distinctive in character almost to the point of a red wine. A deep and vibrant rosé colour with an intense aroma of sweet spices, forest fruits including juicy redcurrants and a tantalising touch of herbs. On the palate you are greeted by a full-bodied, thick and meaty rosé with a creamy texture and warming alcohol. The wine is balanced by a beautiful acidity which allows the abundance of sweet spices and fruitiness to shine. This remarkable vintage culminates in an unusually long finish, making this an intriguing choice for rosé-sceptics and red wine lovers alike.

Food pairing recommendation: The fruitiness of the wine goes very well with dishes including roast duck and plum sauce as well as pasta with tomato based sauces. For a match made in heaven, try it with an indulgent black forest gateau and experience a delightful warmness and a perfect harmony of flavours.

Winery: Vesztergombi Winery, Szekszárd - Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

The Vesztergombi family looks back on a centuries-old tradition of winemaking in the region around Szekszárd in southern Hungary, where the River Danube meanders between rolling hills and fertile valleys. This scenic setting provides the perfect conditions for growing red grapes with character. The Vesztergombi winery was re-established in 1991, resurrecting the long-held family tradition. Its first Bikavér (Bull's Blood) was released in 1993, the year when founder Ferenc Vesztergombi was awarded the prestigious “Winemaker of the Year” title in Hungary. Today, with three generations working together in the business, the winery continues to produce outstanding red wines that authentically reflect the unique terroir of the Szekszárd region.
